"The Ride of My Life" Taste of Dakar Episode

Brad Barker is the founder of HALO Corporation, a private security consulting agency, but most recently he’s taken to documenting his experiences on two wheels in a webseries called “The Ride Of My Life.” The episodes chart Barker’s passion for motorcycles and showcases those in the industry he meets. The installment included below follows Barker through AltRider’s Taste of Dakar, including training with Jimmy Lewis. It’s definitely worth the time if you’ve got any interest in off road riding or have ever thought of signing on to experience the Taste of Dakar.

2015 BMW R 1200 RS First Look

2015-bmw-r-1200-rs-preview 1

Back in 1976, BMW released the R 100 RS, a model that helped establish the sport-touring segment as we know it today.
That R 100 RS was the first mass-produced motorcycle to feature a frame-mounted fairing that was wind-tunnel tested – a commonplace thing in modernity.
For 2015, BMW returns the RS name to its lineup with the all-new R 1200 RS. The model, which was unveiled ahead of INTERMOT along with the 2015 S 1000 RR and R 1200 R, arrives with the same 125-horsepower flat-twin boxer engine that powers the R 1200 GS, R 1200 RT and the new R 1200 R. But the R 1200 RS’ boxer was revised to offer additional torque at lower rpms.

Dr. Frazier’s Old BMW Pig in a Poke

The 1981 R80G/S was a pig in a poke. To sell it using the Internet screamed caveat emptor but seemed the easiest way to find it a new home.

The Internet ad displayed photographs and described the bike as being “a runner,” and selling “as is.” The seller tried to market the BMW honorably, using the old business saying of “when you proffer the pig, open the poke,” meaning show the buyer what they were getting. This adage dated back to when cats and dogs were often substituted for the more expensive pork by sellers trying to trick buyers, and thus later followed the saying “letting the cat (or dog) out of the bag.” In the case of the vintage BMW R80G/S the seller was trying to prove to the buyer the motorcycle was no dog, but really a quality Bavarian pork, albeit old pork with a questionable 50,000 miles on the odometer.

2014 BMW R1200GS Adventure Ride

Americans like big stuff. Big pickup trucks. Big houses. Big portions at the restaurant table. And, yes, big motorcycles too. Examples of the bigger-is-better trend in bikes are everywhere. Cruisers, sportbikes, dirt bikes… for good or ill, larger bikes sell and the trend has encroached on the popular Adventure market too. BMW has long defined the AT segment with its R1200GS, the popularity of which spurred several manufacturers to follow suit with their own 1200cc ADV platform. BMW’s R1200GS Adventure ups the ante further, bulking up 50 pounds with its off-road accessories and a massive fuel load. It’s as if someone said, “Sure, the GS is nice, but make it bigger.”
